New Insight

An exhibition of top MFA students from some of the country's most influential graduate art programs, New Insight is curated by Susanne Ghez, director of the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago.  A platform for new talent and innovative ideas, New Insight provides the opportunity to view work by some of the brightest young minds working in diverse graduate programs across the country. 

Participating students in the 2009 edition of New Insight include:

Partisan

Curated by Mary Jane Jacob, executive director of exhibitions at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Partisan is a special exhibition of works culled from Art Chicago galleries that are dedicated to the artistic exploration of social and political ideas.  With hopes of initiating dialogue about art, activism and social change, Partisan provides a critical and challenging space of thought provoking and project-oriented works within an art fair context.

The Hairy Who and Imagist Legacy in Contemporary Art

To honor Chicago's legendary Hairy Who and Chicago Imagists, artists best known for a colorful and subversive aesthetic, Art Chicago will present an exhibition of works by contemporary artists whose work demonstrates an Imagist influence, whether it is for an unusual approach to representation, rebellious technique or link to the Imagist lineage.  This exhibition, featuring work by artists represented in the fair, will be curated for Art Chicago by Lynne Warren, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and expert on the history of artistic practice in Chicago. 

The Hairy Who and Imagist Legacy will be accompanied by a display of works by original Hairy Who and Imagist artists including Roger Brown, Ed Paschke, Karl Wirsum, Barbara Rossi, Gladys Nilsson, Art Green and others, on loan by Art Chicago exhibitors including Russell Bowman Art Advisory, Jean Albano Gallery, Carl Hammer Gallery, Landfall Press and Richard Norton Gallery. 

Salute to Realism

Art Chicago is proud to showcase extraordinary representational works in a Salute to Realism.  Throughout the fair, works that deomonstrate realism in a unique or visionary way will be highlighted with a special plaque. 

SOCIETY FOR CONTEMPORARY ART ACQUISITION SELECTION 2 0 0 9
The Society for Contemporary Art (SCA) was founded at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1940 to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the art of our time. Monthly SCA programs provide access to an exciting roster of leading national and international artists, dealers, critics, historians, and curators, as well as visits to distinguished private collections and major art centers within the United States and abroad. On an annual basis, the members of our volunteer-based acquisition committee review a carefully selected group of contemporary works and present them together as an exhibition. Our membership then votes to purchase one or more objects on behalf of the museum. In past years, the SCA has acquired works by artists such as Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Joan Mitchell, Jasper Johns, James Turrell, Dan Graham, Leon Golub, Reinhard Mucha, Lorna Simpson, Guillermo Kuitca, Tacita Dean, Larry Clark, Doug Aitken, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rudolf Stingel, Rosemarie Trockel, and Matthew Monahan.

 This year’s offering includes two paintings, one by Martin Barré (French, 1924–1993) and one by Rebecca Morris (American, born 1969); a digital video projection by Paul Chan (American, born Hong Kong 1973); a suite of unique posters by Matt Mullican (American, born 1951); and a large-scaledrawing by Nancy Spero (American, born 1926). Members will vote on these works at the annual meeting on May 3, 2009
