The Art Institute of Chicago Light Years: Conceptual Art and the Photograph, 1964–1977 Among its many accomplishments, the pioneering movement known broadly as Conceptual Art succeeded in bringing photography definitively into the mainstream of contemporary art. Artists such as Ed Ruscha, Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari, Eleanor Antin, and Sigmar Polke took up the production of new photographs—as opposed to using found images from mass media and consumer culture like the Pop artists — and placed photography firmly on an equal basis with avant-garde painting and sculpture. |
Gallery 400 Archival Impulse Numerous artists in Gallery 400’s history have demonstrated an interest in the archive as a structuring device and a site through which histories are contested. Including those artists, as well as others currently employing archive processes, Archival Impulse gathers together works that draw from historical archives, construct new archives in varied collection formats, mine the archives of art history, and generally question the ways in which cultural memory is established. *Visit the exhibition on December 14 for a Film and Video Screening, curated by Jesse McLean and Deborah Stratman. |
